Over a three-year period, artist Kristofer Dan-Bergman documented the residents of the Lower East Side, using the former Essex Market as a backdrop, amidst the shifting face of the neighborhood. Historically home to a diverse immigrant community and a significant art scene (in part due to the once-affordable rents), redevelopment in the Lower East Side has ushered in considerable demographic and financial change. For the artist, the 2019 move of Essex Market into Essex Crossing was a notable symbol of this gentrifying community. Now, Dan-Bergman returns to this historical site to reflect on the people and places impacted by rapid transformation.
This program is made possible by the New York City Artist Corps.
