Ellie Krakow

“I had the pleasure of spending a year in the Lower East Side as a resident artist at the Abrons Arts Center in 2010-11. It was a fantastic place to work and a great community to be a part of so I was delighted to return to the neighborhood to do a show at Cuchifritos the following year.”
I am fascinated by the backstage, the underside, and all the unseen structures that hold fantasies, memories, and histories in place. I use language and imagery culled from behind-the-scenes apparatuses. I fetishize tools and systems; I use them as intended; and I overuse them to reveal them. This enables me to do two things simultaneously: to tell stories, which is central to how I understand humanity; and to re-contextualize fixed notions of how stories and ideas of reality are constructed.
