In summer 2022, New York-based artist Manuel Molina Martagon led the workshop Spice Stories, collaborating with 6-8 grade students from District 1’s Summer Rising program.
The workshop combined world history and geography to explore the role of spices throughout different historical periods and their changing value over time. The group reflected on the importance of maritime commerce in broadening access to spices and its impact on the creation and consolidation of the colonial world.
Students learned about each spice and had a chance to try different foods that contain them. At the end of the workshop, students left with a little spice kit.
Special thanks to Essex Market Vendors Essex Olive & Spice and Viva Fruits & Vegetables for their collaboration.
